SNL RESPONDS TO THE ELECTION
The realest moment on television came from a comedy show that decided to press pause on humor. Following the presidential election, Kate McKinnon opened Saturday Night Live with a hallowing performance of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” dressed in full Hillary Clinton garb.
This introduction paid tribute to Clinton’s devastating loss, as well as mourning the death of Cohen earlier that week. Though many turned to SNL to mask their terror under a veil of laughter, they instead experienced an emotional ballad, intensifying the week’s solemn tone.
Between the song’s line “I told the truth; I didn’t come to fool you,” and McKinnon’s final spoken words as Clinton, where she turned to the audience and said, “I’m not giving up and neither should you,” the moment was emotional, powerful, and unforgettable.
