Construction on the much anticipated Student Wellness Center is well underway on Auraria Campus.
The project’s construction broke ground in September of 2016 and the process, according to Executive Director of the Wellness Center Amber Long, has been smooth sailing so far.
From the windows of the Student Commons Building, students can see the building beginning to grow. “The walls and concrete structures are taking shape,” Long said. “We are also in the process of beginning the search for future full time staff.”
The search is starting well in advance, but there are many positions to fill on both administrative and in-building positions. The Wellness Center will have various amenity spaces to keep up with, including a six-lane lap pool, a student kitchen, and a bike repair shop.
The Wellness Center is set to open around March of 2018, just in time to welcome the freshman class of 2022. Though many currently-attending students will have graduated by the time the Wellness Center has opened, they can still partake in the excitement of the building process. A virtual reality model of the building is being created on-site for students to view and immerse themselves in the future atmosphere of the Wellness Center. Long stated that there is no concrete date for the opening of this mini-exhibit, but students should be on the lookout for it.
The Wellness Center aims not only to allow students to live a healthy lifestyle on campus, but to bring the CU Denver community together through wellness and activity. The building will have various common rooms and study areas, a game room, and gender-inclusive locker rooms.
