Fall Out Boy | Dear Future Self (Hands Up) | Single Review

Island Records
Rating: Thumbs down

If Fall Out Boy hadn’t completely cemented their flavorless millennial-pop sound on their previous three records, this new single does the trick. “Dear Future Self (Hands Up)” is some kind of Radio Disney-inspired surf rock groove, with a lame feature from Wyclef Jean. The instrumental tones are uncomfortably spotless, squeaky clean, and unappealing, as are Patrick Stump’s uninspired lyrics about nothing in particular. Even those that have enjoyed the group’s last few records will find this track to be a pretty tough three minutes to get through. Hopefully this release doesn’t indicate the coming of similar sounding album.
