Popeye’s new item takes the throne

Opinion by Sam Weigel

The Popeye’s/Chick-fil-A debate has gone on long enough. If the clear favorite hasn’t already been made abundantly obvious, then perhaps some clarity is in order.

First off, a Popeye’s chicken sandwich is a guilt-free hunger satisfier, or at least in comparison to the questionable business practices of Chick-fil-A. These business practices of course being the company’s notorious outright disrespect of the LGBTQ community, which hasn’t really changed much since 2012. It was in that year that owner S. Truett Cathy acknowledged the company’s religiously tinged anti-gay marriage policies, according to Vox. Vox also cites that the company frequently makes donations to charities like the Marriage & Family Foundation and the Fellowship of Christian athletes, both of which have openly discriminatory policies against LGBTQ persons.

One might argue that the policies of the restaurant will have no bearing on the quality of the sandwich itself. But nothing can ruin a perfectly delicious sandwich like the knowledge that it’s the brainchild of an organization that actively exhibits these intolerant behaviors.

Aside from that, the Popeye’s sandwich tastes better on its own for a couple other reasons. The breading is far superior, imitating Cajun-style cooking, or at least the easily accessible fast-food version. Chick-fil-A, by contrast, provides a mostly tasteless chicken sandwich. If one is not ordering the spicy variation (if it can even be called that), expect a texture reminiscent of watery cardboard.

True, the Popeye’s chicken sandwich has reportedly sold out at all locations. However, this fact is simply a testament to the excellence of the Popeye’s ‘wich over Chick-fil-A’s. Unless the recipe or the company itself undergoes serious alteration, the Chick-fil-A sandwich shouldn’t expect to be selling out anytime soon.

Chick-fil-a is a classic that can’t be beat

Opinion by Isaiah Mancha

Ever since Popeye’s announced and unveiled their new chicken sandwich meal, social media has been in a frenzy, sparking the debate of which fast food chicken sandwich is the best. From McDonald’s, to Wendy’s, to now Popeye’s, no other chicken sandwich will best that which Chick-fil-A serves its customers.

Founded in 1946, Chick-fil-A has grown into being the largest chicken fast food chain in the world. With such high fame, it’s only fitting for their chicken sandwiches to be perfected and made exquisite for each who order it. It’s not just the  occasional “My pleasure” from the workers that gets things going, but it’s what happens after one has received their food, whether it’s to go or for dine in.

Unlike McDonald’s, whose sad little flat McChicken looks nothing like that of the menu, Chick-fil-A perfects their sandwiches so that they are picture perfect. When looking at the menu and seeing that Spicy Chicken Deluxe Sandwich   Combo, one knows that they are getting their money’s worth. (Guess that’s why the McChicken is on the Dollar Menu).

It is also better tasting than the new Popeye’s sandwich. Chick-fil-A chicken is never a disappointment: full of flavor and juicy rather than its dry and tasteless opponent. There just isn’t enough zest in this Louisiana fast food special compared to Chick-fil-A. Tasting more like paper and nothing like what a chicken sandwich should taste like, the $3.99 just isn’t worth pulling out of a wallet.

Granted, Popeye’s sandwiches are being sold out across the United States, sparking anger from customers for restaurants not having enough. But on the other hand, Chick-fil-A isn’t on a shortage of sandwiches and customers aren’t getting angry and getting into fights over a simple piece of meat between two pieces of bread. Something that should be kept in mind.
