Vampire Weekend | Harmony Hall/2021 | Single Review
Rating: Thumbs Up
After six years of silence, indie rock combo Vampire Weekend has released brand new singles “Harmony Hall” and “2021.” The former and more substantial track features a baroque-influenced guitar solo, afro-pop rhythms, and Ezra Koening’s breathy timbre—all attributes of a classic Vampire Weekend tune. However, both tracks feel unsettlingly unfamiliar. The mix itself is uncharacteristically shallow, with thin piano tones and strained percussion. The song also seems to be some sort of social call to arms, a departure from Koening’s usual romantic, endearing lyrics. Still, they’re solid tracks that will leave fans optimistic for the new record.
