Lil Yachty | Nuthin’ 2 Prove | Album Review
Quality Control Music / Mowtown / Capital
Rating: 2 out 5 stars
Lil Yachty released his third studio album titled Nuthin’ 2 Prove. Featuring multiple guest artists such as Playboi Carti, Cardi B, Offset, and Juice WRLD, the album fails to deliver on the momentum that was built under his name. Rather, the strength of the album is carried through the vocals of those featured.
The album lacks unity. Yachty, in his previous work, doesn’t specifically rap about a given subject. More so, his music is typically only listened to for a hype feeling, nothing more and nothing less.
With an overly auto-tuned voice, Yachty is unable to establish a decent flow throughout the album. Each track consists of different beats with fast-paced tempo, yet his voice sounds drained of energy, leaving a sour taste rather a euphonic one. The song “I’m The Mack” begins with a harmonious flute-like sound but is ruined by Yachty’s opening line: “Dropped out of school that shit was for the pussies.” Not only is it a poor line, but it ruins the melody through a poor transition.
However, in all that is bad, there is some good. In a song collaborating with Cardi B and Offset titled “Who Want The Smoke?,” the two rappers bring a nice, steady and enjoyable flow to a beat that consists of high-pitch notes and percussion. Offset offers rapid-fire lyricism while Cardi B brings the hype with her loud vocals.
Nuthin’ 2 Prove is no more a mixtape than an album. There is no real proven point, hence the wordplay of the album’s title as to what the meaning is. Besides “Who Want The Smoke?,” there are some well-produced melodies in “Worth It” and “Stoney.” It is an alright album to listen to, but from the amount of guest artists featured, it shows that Yachty is yet to be capable of handling projects on his own.
