John Carpenter | The Shape Returns | Single Review
With the release of the 2018 version of Halloween, composer John Carpenter has given the classic piano theme a 21st century update with a classic 1970’s touch. “The Shape Returns” maintains the original skittery piano and adds retro-sounding synth chords in a minor key to support the already suspenseful melody. A minute into the track, a single scratchy note plays as a clock ticking fills the silence. After an unnervingly long time of ticking, it’s rejoined with the synth and piano, building the feeling of being chased. Carpenter’s updated track enhances the original seasonal Halloween favorite perfectly and deserves a place on any Halloween playlist.
