A night to remember for children battling cancer

CU Denver’s Love Your Melon Crew headed to the Pepsi Center on Jan. 19 to celebrate their very own themed night. They cheered on the Denver Nuggets in a matchup against the Phoenix Suns. “Love Your Melon Night” is one of many themed game nights the student org has been involved with.

Love Your Melon is an apparel brand that hopes to put a hat on every child battling cancer in America while raising funds for nonprofits that lead the fight against pediatric cancer. Though the company has only been around since 2012, their “Campus Crews” program has helped them to expand their organization to 840 campuses across the nation.

Thanks to hard work by senior and current Crew Captain Ellie Laughlin, Love Your Melon has been at CU Denver for the past six semesters. Love Your Melon Campus Crews work locally in their communities to plan “Superhero Adventures” for kids battling cancer. Superhero Adventures are designed to provide the children as well as their families a fun break from all the stresses that occur while undergoing treatment.

Love Your Melon Night at the Nuggets game is one of many superhero adventures the organization has planned since its start. As the social director of Love Your Melon Katie Spiegle explained, “Love Your Melon Game Nights were designed to bring communities together, provide awesome hats for fans, as well as provide tickets to children and their families who are battling cancer.”

Aside from the courtside seats that the Pepsi Center provided, the children and their families were also invited on the court to help hold the flag during the national anthem. The kids were even featured several times throughout the game on the jumbotron. If the children’s smiles are any indication, it’s safe to say that their superhero adventure was a success.
