How Did This Get Made? critiques unbelievable films

The Room, Ultraviolet, and The Lawnmower Man are just a few movies that fall into the coveted “so bad it’s good” genre of film. Every two weeks Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, and Jason Mantzoukas discuss the movies in this genre and try to make sense of them on their podcast How Did This Get Made?

Scheer begins each episode with a one sentence summary or a quote from the movie they are about to discuss. They then play their truly impressive theme song, which is a rap made up mostly of movie titles. Then they go into excruciating detail about the problems with the movie. They have had many guests on their podcasts, such as Paul F. Tompkins, Scott Aukerman, Jon Gabrus, and Lauren Lapkus. They bring some of the best improvisers, comedians, and writers on their show to talk about some of the worst movies ever made.

One of their more popular episodes was the episode they did on the movie The Room. The Room is a 2003 movie about a man whose fiancé cheats on him with his best friend for seemingly no reason—however, despite the seemingly obvious plot, the actual thrill of the movie gets even more insane. The movie has become a  cult favorite and has midnight screenings all over the country to this day.

This particular episode also inspired the creation of The Disaster Artist, which is the movie about the creation of The Room, written by Michael H. Webber and Scott Neustadter and directed by James Franco. Scheer, Mantzoukas, and Raphael co-star in The Disaster Artist as well.

Another movie they discussed was the 2010 movie Birdemic: Shock and Terror. They talk about the movie with “Weird Al” Yankovic and try to make sense of what the movie is about. They even talk to Whitney Moore, who plays Nathalie, the female lead, in the quirky romantic horror movie. She talks about how the casting was done in the parking lot of a high school, and many more insane experiences she had to go through to be a part of the movie.

In addition to the actor features, one of the best things about this podcast is how funny it is. Jason Mantzoukas and Paul Scheer are known for their roles on The League. Mantzoukas plays Rafi, who is the most memorable character from that show because of his repulsive behavior and absolutely hilarious personality. Scheer played Andre on the show and is funny as well. June Diane Raphael has also guest-starred on The League, but is mostly known for her role as Brianna Hanson on the Netflix original show Grace & Frankie. Scheer and Raphael were also on NTSF:SD:SUV, a largely popular Adult Swim show.

Who knows what else they will inspire next. This podcast is so funny that it is a must listen for any movie lover. How Did This Get Made? Is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, earwolf.com, and other podcast streaming services.
