Taylor Swift | Gorgeous: Single Review

Browse By

Artist: Taylor Swift
Single: Gorgeous
Release Date: Oct. 20th, 2017

“Gorgeous” is Taylor Swift at her worst. Released on Oct. 20, the track compromises the quality of her otherwise promising album, Reputation, with juvenile themes and a lackluster production. Rhythmically, the song has all the variance of a flatlined heart, and the wordplay is similarly dead on arrival. While audiences have forgiven Swift’s lesser lyrics in the past (namely, the lyric in “Out of the Woods” forgets that “hitting the brakes too soon” usually prevents accidents, not causes them), lines like “You make me so happy it turns back to sad” verge on being as grammatically incomprehensible as they are lazy. In the last decade, Swift’s only consistency has been writing compelling narratives into otherwise generic pop tracks, but “Gorgeous” never progresses its story from the moment it begins—and that moment is one better off forgotten.
