Morrissey | Spent the Day in Bed: Single Review
On Sept. 19, the English singer and songwriter Morrissey released his single “Spent the Day in Bed,” whose main message talks about how humanity should “switch off” from the world and enjoy time away from the news, work, and overall hectic lives.
“Stop watching the news! / Because the news contrives to frighten you / To make you feel small and alone / To make you feel that your mind isn’t your own,” he sings. The single isn’t a far departure from Morrisey’s cynical lyricism in The Smiths, but it takes a contemporary stance to his past work.
The song has a techno beat but is often lumbering in regard to the tone in which Morrissey sings. Despite its catchy lyrics, the track elicits a negative connotation toward today’s media. Morrissey is known for his beautiful melodies and political statements and this piece reminds fans of his charismatic, yet pessimistic, charm.
