CTRL | SZA
On June 9, SZA’s newest album Ctrl is yet another addition to her ever-expanding opus. Produced by the critically acclaimed studio Top Dawg Entertainment, who has produced other artists such as Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q, it seems as though SZA is living up to the lofty standards of her label.
SZA is Solana Imani Rowe, and she has mastered the art of blending seriously low-key R&B beats with spacious and tantalizing electronic chords. This combination of sounds allows for the distant nature of Rowe’s voice to be fully realized.
In every track on the album, there is a massive diversity of sound; however, the primary common thread between every track is that her voice is the focal point. This is a quality that is often missed by many mainstream musicians. But on this album, Rowe displays a profound control over her music.
Rowe also proves in this album that she is fully capable of making collaborations enhance her own sound. Tracks like “Doves in the Wind” featuring Kendrick Lamar and “Love Galore” featuring Travis Scott possess a beautiful balance of Rowe’s haunting tones and the rapping prowess of Lamar and Scott.
For anyone looking for a chill album to lose their self in, look no further than SZA.
