CALIFORNIA BAND TAKES BLUEBIRD

Lane 8 has been playing sold out shows on almost every date of his 2016 tour. Selling out the Bluebird Theater on Nov. 12, he created an intriguing ambiance for house music.

Lane 8 is Daniel Goldstein, a California native currently based in Leipzig, Germany. Goldstein is an electronic music producer as well as a growing beacon in the world of electronic music. Goldstein has quickly created a vast and loyal  internatinoal fanbase. The 26 year old signed and released his debut album Rise with the English deep house label Anjunadeep, generating extensive appeal amongst the sanguine clubbers and the casual at home listeners.

The evening dubbed, “This Never Happened,” embraces the idea that watching a concert or performance through a cell phone screen distracts from the importance of the music and the instant experience as well as creating true human connections.

The concert experience that Goldstein creates is one that a few artists have adopted. Goldstein, along with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Savages, Prince, Neutral Milk Hotel all strictly prohibit the use of electronics during their performances.

It is no surprise that many of the 21st century are entranced by technology and feel the compulsive need to document every moment of their reality, but Goldstein urges his audience to truly experience the music and to alter society’s obsession.

Goldstein’s set time was listed from 10:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. which his fitting for electronic music although it did feel odd for concert-goers to experience it in a concert venue as opposed to a giant warehouse or an underground club.

Many of Goldstein’s songs have a consistent backbeat amidst the rest of his sample, acting like a subliminal message, it is easy to get entranced by the music.

Goldstein has a wide variety of tracks, ranging from softer and melodic to rapid and energetic. The ebb and flow of the songs created an intriguing undulation of driving kick drums. Some tracks seemed like they should be the background music to a cinematic drive down a dark highway and some seemed to rile up as much energy as they could in the crowd.

Lane 8 creates a very crafted form of techno music which is refreshing compared to the amount of mindless dubstep that has been produced in the last few years. Goldstein creates an energy with his music and his performance.

He published a written letter to his audience that states: “At ‘This Never Happened,’ we invite you into a space where the only thing that matters are the people in that room, the music, and the magic that happens when those things interact. An event where the dance floor will be a phone and photo-free space…This experience we share together may, by 2016 standards, have never happened. But those who dare will always know something special did happen here.”
