On the Record With Raul (Orientation 2016)
One thing people know about me is that I love Commencement. At CU Denver we begin with the end in mind, and are totally devoted to getting our students to that graduation finish line as smoothly and efficiently as possible. We consider this New Student Orientation your starting line.
Who’s this Raul guy
Now, many of you are probably wondering, who is this guy and why is he the one welcoming me to campus? Well, let me introduce myself. My name is Raul Cardenas, Jr. and I’m a member of CU Denver’s senior leadership team. My official title is Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, which I know can sound a little intimidating. But, I’m just a regular guy with a terrific staff of nearly 200 people working to support your academic journey as you set out to earn your CU Denver degree.
Here to help
Student affairs includes a diverse collection of university areas including Student Life, the Registrar, the Career Center, Peer Advocate Leaders, the Counseling Center, and much, much more. Your student experience and success are top priority for all of us. I encourage you to use this time at Orientation to learn about all the services the university offers and to explore your new, exciting campus environment.
You’ll want to get to know the Lynx Center in the new Student Commons Building. The Lynx Center will always be your first stop for any questions you have about CU Denver or the surrounding community. If the Center’s staff doesn’t have an answer, they’ll find it for you. Even better, in celebration of our weekly Spirit Thursdays, the Lynx Center often serves up free treats like donuts or popcorn!
I always enjoy strolling across Speer Boulevard into the vibrant heart of our downtown Denver community. We call Lawrence Street our “education corridor” because that’s where our campus stretches directly into the city, connecting the Auraria Campus with additional CU Denver locations, including the Business School and the College of Architecture and Planning. It also directly links our students to job and internship opportunities with our business partners.
Milo the Lynx and more
You are joining an active and engaged student body that continues to shape the look of our physical campus and contribute to the university’s welcoming, inclusive environment. Our new mascot Milo the Lynx is the “big cat on campus” and is one of several initiatives that was driven by students, including our new club sports program and soon-to-be-built Wellness Center.
As you can tell, there’s a lot going on here at CU Denver. And, now that you’re at Orientation, you’re smack-dab in the middle of it. We know your focus is getting to that finish line and that’s our focus, too. Before you know it, it’ll be your Commencement Day, and I can’t wait to be there to share it with you. I said it before, but it’s worth repeating—we’re all so glad you’re here. Welcome to CU Denver!
